Professional Interests

My interests include a range of environmental and lifestyle exposures that may play a role in the development of various cancers, either as risk factors or protective factors. Major focuses include: 1) the roles of tobacco and alcohol in cancers of different sites; 2) the roles of diet and specific nutrients in relation to the risk of various cancers, including glycemic index/glycemic load, intake of iron and heme iron, antioxidants, and B-vitamins; 3) risk factors for lung cancer in people who have never smoked; 4) exposure to endogenous hormones (including estrogens and insulin), hormone therapy, and metabolic factors; and 5) the role of obesity, anthropometric factors (including body mass index, waist circumference, and height), and physical activity in relation to the risk of different cancers
